Jon woke up but it was still dark. He blinked and opened his eyes but it made no difference, there was still no light. Momentarily disoriented, he heard the soft voice at the same time he realized there was something covering his eyes.
"It's a bandage." the nurse said. "Just so you aren't startled, remember?"
He nodded and dropped the hand he'd been raising to his eyes back onto his lap. He remembered now, he was in the hospital and he'd been asleep while some nano-machinery replaced the defective color cones in his eyes with functioning clones. The nurse murmured something about being right back and he heard the door swing closed but he could sense that he wasn't alone in the room. He could hear someone breathing and he turned his head in that direction. "Hello?" he queried softly.
"Right here," Guy answered, his voice soft, placing the comic he'd been reading over to the side. "You've been out for awhile," he added, touching the back of Jon's hand.
Jon fastened onto the offered grip and smiled. "I didn't think you'd still be here. What time is it?"
"Uhhh," Guy craned his neck to find the clock. "Three-thirty. And what do you mean, you didn't think I'd be here- I said I would, didn't I?" he chided gently, giving Jon's hand a squeeze. "Wouldn't want you waking up alone, especially since you can't see."
"He'll be seeing just fine in a minute." A voice from the doorway announced. Jon heard footsteps and someone gently bumping the side of the bed. "Feel alright?"
Jon nodded, "Feel fine. Not ill at all."
"Ah, good, good." It was Mr. Lawless, of course and he set about fiddling with the bandage and loosening it. Jon's fingers tightened around Guy's. "Now, before I take this off, I'm going to ask you to close your eyes while I put a special set of smart-glasses on for you, okay? The glasses will let you see in monochrome and will gradually allow more color in over the next few days." He heard Mr. Lawless chuckle. "Of course, you don't have to leave them on all the time. We just provide them so you've got a back-up if it gets overwhelming. Ready?"
Jon obediently closed his eyes and felt the material being tugged away and cold metal cross the bridge of his nose and wrap around his ears. "There you go." Mr. Lawless said in satisfied tones. "Open up now."
Jon blinked and opened his eyes. They watered a little and the doctor handed him a tissue, apparently anticipating the flow. "Right," he said after a little period of adjustment during which Jon just blinked, looked around and gave Guy a nervous smile. "When you're ready, take them off." The nurse who'd come back into the room with him, pressed a button and the lights dimmed down. Experimentally, Jon pushed the glasses down his nose and peered over the top of them at Guy. "Oh." he breathed. "Oh!"
Guy watched, a little nervous, a smile breaking across his face at the sound in Jon's voice. "Something new? Because I know you've seen me before," he murmured, cocking his head to the side a little.
"Oh Guy." Jon was blinking back tears as he raised a hand without thinking to Guy's face. "Your eyes . . . what is that?"
Guy looked confused for a moment, his expression suddenly clearing in a moment of understanding. His grin softened as he reached out and gently brushed the tears away with the pad of his thumb. "Blue, Jon. That's blue."
"It's . . . it's . . . beautiful." Jon looked round at the doctor for confirmation and winced as his vision was assaulted by blast after blast of what could only be color. Dr. Lawless, smiling broadly, quickly pushed the glasses back up Jon's nose and he breathed a sigh of relief.
"Well then," the doctor said. "I'll leave you to it for now. You can go home anytime you're ready and we'll see you back here next week for final analysis, alright?" Without waiting for a response, he bustled out, the nurse offering a smile before she followed him. Jon immediately turned back to Guy and leaned in close to him, his fingers on the nose piece of the glasses. "Let me see again." he entreated, sliding the glasses down.
Guy grinned, Jon's enthusiasm infectious. He leaned closer, opening his eyes widely. "Does it make sense, what I said before? Blue is a cool color, like water out of the tap."
"Yes. Oh yes." Jon couldn't help his fingers sliding across Guy's face, nor the tears threading their way down his cheeks. He got as close as he could, close enough that he could make out specks of other colors, different colors swimming in the blue. "The most beautiful thing I've ever seen." he said in a hushed, awed whisper. "Ever."
"That's nothing," Guy beamed. "There's things out there a hell of a lot more beautiful than my eyes. First chance I get, once your eyes are all healed up? I'm showing you a rainbow. And then maybe a peacock. And then the ocean, because if you like blue so much, you'll love that."
"No." Jon denied softly. "You don't understand. I will never see anything more beautiful than your eyes right now." He smiled and kissed the tip of Guy's nose. "Never."
