"C'mon then," Guy said airily to Jon as he guided him off the tram, taking a deep breath and heading towards the open-air market that extended down the street a few blocks. "This is a great place to pick up a few shirts- we can get something fun and individual at the same time, see what suits you. Plus, they're all really well made- so they'll last a long time, but not in the, 'Dear God, why won't you die?' way that Teflon clothing of you've got now does."

There were so many people! So much bustle and noise and stores of every kind! Jon was both mesmerized and terrified. He'd never seen anything like this in his entire life and even though he'd been at Palace for a while now, had never had the need or the confidence to venture downtown before. It made him step even closer to Guy, instinctively seeking his protection from all the strangeness, following along in his wake, in a near-panic, worried that he might lose his only anchor in this sea of people. "I don't think this is a very good idea." he muttered low, dodging a lady with a trolley and a snappy dog. "In fact, I think it's a dreadful one. I'm going to get lost, I just know I am."

Guy let out a dramatic sigh and reached behind him, taking Jon's hand and lacing their fingers together. "There. Hold tight to me and you won't get lost. And there's hardly any people at all- you should see this place on a Friday night when they've got the street performers out. I'll have to bring you some time." Guy offered, smiling to a few people he recognized as they continued on down the street.

Jon's head snapped from right to left, spotting something interesting , only to be dragged further on by Guy and spotting something else! This was like . . . well, it was like the ancient Christmases he'd read about in the history texts, a veritable cornucopia of overabundance. Jon was suddenly glad he couldn't see colors, convinced his eyes would be blinded by what he imagined was a wealth of color. "I don't think coming here when there are even more people is something I fancy."

"Uh huh," Guy said, not paying any attention at all to Jon's polite refusal. We'll see. "Ooh- okay, now look at this!" he said, dragging Jon over to a stall filled with brightly patterned, short sleeved button down shirts. "Now, you're going to have to trust me on the color, but what do you think?" he asked, turning Jon to face a mirror and standing behind him, holding a shirt in front of his chest.

"It's . . ." Jon cocked his head to one side, concentrating hard to pick out the pattern on the background of black and white. "Pretty?" he tried, studying it closely. Tentatively, he reached out and fingered the fabric. "Feels nice." he said.

"Ahhh- so we know you like silk. That's a start," Guy murmured, trying a few more shirts in front of Jon and rejecting them all. "Okay, so we've got a few options to come back to," he said, grabbing his hand again and pulling him away. "Unless you've got a ton of money to burn, or you find something you really like, you never buy anything at the start of these places." he advised Jon, moving him onward through the crowd.

"Oh?" Jon walked a bit more confidently now, his fear of the number of people around having abated slightly. Picking up his pace, he managed to mostly stay by Guy's side, only dropping back when something or someone got in the way. "I'll do whatever you recommend." he said. "In fact . . ." Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out his debit card and held it out. "I'd like it if you looked after this for me. I don't have a clue what to do," he ducked his head, a little ashamed. "how to pay and so forth." he admitted.

"Got it," Guy nodded, slipping the card into the pocket of his loose white shirt. Probably better if he doesn't see what stuff costs anyway he mused. "So- feel free to yell stop if you see something you're really- ooh!" Guy's eyes shone, his attention caught by something bright and shiny.

Jon was moving along quite nicely now, thank you very much and beginning to get into the swing of this when Guy abruptly halted, tugged, and he shot sideways, coming to rest with his hips against the wooden trestle of a stall covered in jewelry. He looked at the items with interest. There really was some exquisite workmanship involved, he thought, as he touched a solid link bracelet with his finger. "See something you like?" he asked Guy.

"Oh yeah," Guy said, drawn to the same bracelet display as Jon. "That's the one real downside of Palace bracelets," he said, somewhat mournfully. "They're such works of bloody art that you put any thing else with 'em, and it either looks showy or tacky. Only time I mind 'em is when I see something like this." Guy held up a bracelet against Jon's wrist, rejected it as too clunky and tried another, grinning at the result. "Now that would look good on you." he determined.

"On me!" Jon squeaked. He'd never worn a piece of jewelry until he'd come here. "No, no. I couldn't." he said hastily, embarrassed by the very idea. "I wear Palace bracelets too, perhaps, umm, this?" He grabbed for the nearest thing and discovered he'd picked up a long silver chain with a tag thing attached to it. It really was nice though; blank in the centre but with a beautiful design carved around the edge on both sides. "I like this." he said truthfully.

Guy examined the chain carefully- Jon had actually picked out something quite nice. "Good- done," he said, taking it neatly out of his hand before he could discover what the price was and handing it to the clerk, along with Jon's card.

"I think we want this engraved, yeah? What say we get... 'Cheeky Minx' put on it," Guy suggested, his eyes sparkling.

"I . . . but . . . oh. All right." Jon's frown faded and his smile was bright. He really did like it. "Do what?!" He registered Guy's suggestion. "You wouldn't!" he protested but he felt warm inside and his eyes danced with sympathetic mirth.

"No, I wouldn't," Guy sighed, shaking his head at the clerk. "Not with your money anyway," he clarified, grinning as he noted Jon's bank balance. Perfect. More then enough for what he needs

After that, shopping was fun! They hunted the market from one end to the other and back again, Guy's hand guiding Jon from stall to stall, selecting, trying, rejecting and buying. Eventually, after they'd stopped for a nice cold drink and a bit of a rest at an outdoor cafe at one end, Jon looked down to discover he had more than five bags, all containing shirts and trousers and other little assorted items Guy deemed necessary and it was all for him! He felt decadent and wicked and wonderful, all at the same time and he grinned at Guy as they discarded their drink containers into the bin and said, "So, what's next?"

That decision was easy- especially after seeing Jon in clothes that actually looked good. "Haircut. C'mon- there's a great place 'round the corner," Guy said, grabbing a handful of bags and pointing in the right direction.

Jon blinked twice and then followed, having long since given up questioning Guy's decisions. If his friend said haircut, then haircut it would be! He trotted alongside him, practically bouncing with excess energy and smiling at everyone they passed. "In here?" he asked when Guy stopped, eyeing the very exclusive looking shop front with some trepidation returning. "It looks . . ." He was going to say 'expensive' but then thought better of it. Guy knew what he was doing, he'd not steer Jon wrong.

"It'll be fine, don't worry. Salon owner's a client of mine- lets see if he can fit you in," Guy grinned, strolling through the door and up to the counter. "Oi! Hortense! Need a favor, mate."

Jon stayed right by the door, even more intimidated by the decor of the place than he'd been by the facade. Guy vanished around the back of a partition and Jon looked nervously around, seeing implements that looked like torture devices and photographic studies of strange hair-do's on the walls. Whatever happened to scissors and a towel, he wondered frantically. He was contemplating his immediate fate when Guy reappeared with a strange looking little man in tow.

"Oh. My. God." Hortense stared at Jon in horror, walking around him in a slow circle. "What did he do, stick a bowl on his head and let someone just hack off the excess?" he demanded, staring at Guy as though it was his fault.

Jon was completely horrified by the man's rude words and he bristled instantly. "No!" he said fiercely, watching the man as he circled. "I did not. What's your excuse? Have an accident with a runaway lawnmower?" As soon as it was out, he was sorry and clapped a hand over his mouth, blushing furiously.

Guy snorted and burst out laughing. "Okay, tha's it. Gimme that chain back, I'm taking it to the jewelers and getting it engraved 'Guy's little sassy-pants'. " he forced out between giggles as Hortense huffed, offended. "Jon, mate, didn't anyone ever teach you it isn't wise to make fun of the fella who's about to have a set of barber scissors whippin' around your head?"

"But . . . but . . . he was rude!" Jon pointed an accusing finger at the tiny man with the purple hair. He stuck his face in close to Hortense's. "If you mess up my hair," he warned. "I will smite you!" and he poked out his tongue for good measure.

Hortense huffed and turned around, heading towards the shampoo stations and snapping his fingers in the air, gesturing for Jon to follow behind him. Fighting off another round of desperate giggles, Guy schooled his face and tried to calm Jon down. "Jon, seriously now. The hair needs work- and Hortense is an artist- he's not gonna 'mess up your hair'. Besides, you keep this up and the tip I'm gonna have to leave him is going to outweigh the cost of the cut," he warned him.

Jon mumbled to himself but kept his peace, following the nasty little man to the back of the shop. He sat in the chair the man held out and glared at his reflection in the mirror. I'll be watching you, he thought loudly as Hortense picked up the scissors and looked to Guy for orders.

Guy scanned the pictures on the walls and pointed to one behind Jon. "Like that, only less so, with a bit more length. We won't mess with the color today I don't think, though maybe next time," he offered, pacifying Hortense who was about to object, fairly certain he wouldn't be able to convince Jon to try for highlights. Maybe something in a nice bright teal... he thought with a snort, pondering that with Jon's coloring, it actually wouldn't be that bad of a look.

Jon sat uncomfortably, trying not to fidget, while the work went on. Hair fell on his wrapped shoulders and onto his nose and he blew it off when he could, earning him disapproving looks from Hortense. Finally, the little man sprayed him with water from a bottle and set to combing the final style and, Jon was forced to admit, it did look kind of nice. He offered a tentative smile by way of apology and received a nod in return. There! Good relations restored. Well, mostly. Hortense swept the towel from his shoulders with a grand gesture and Jon got to his feet, turning around to let Guy see it properly a little unsure what his reaction would be.

"There!" Guy beamed, coming forward and tilting Jon's head from side to side, walking around him to get the full impact. "Now we're getting somewhere. Thanks mate," he said to Hortense, receiving a dignified nod in return. "I'll be in for mine in a few weeks." he promised, smirking a little and adding, "Unless I see you at Palace first, 'course." Steering Jon out of the shop, he paused again to get a good look at it in the sunlight and nodded again. "Perfect. Much better. All right- moving right along then." he said brightly, heading for the nearby department store.

They were off again, Jon trotting to keep up with Guy's long stride. "I really am sorry." he said. "I didn't know he was a client. But honestly, he was insufferable!" He followed Guy's abrupt right turn into a big store and then stopped, his eyes widening and his mouth dropping open. "Oh my!" he gasped, taking in the amount of merchandise. Guy was forced to grab his hand and literally drag him to get him to move. "Where are we going?" he asked, breathlessly. "What else could I possibly need?"

"Are you kidding me? I promised you top to bottom, didn't I? And I've done top, but haven't gone near bottom yet," Guy smirked, continuing to drag Jon around, suddenly abandoning him for a moment, back again just a few seconds later, holding a leopard print silk thong two inches from Jon's nose.

Jon's eyes bugged. What the . . .? "Is that what I think it is?" he said, backing away.

"What?" Guy did his very best to look innocent. "No, granted, I don't wear underwear, because it gets in the way in me line of work, but you do- well you call 'em underwear anyway," Guy shuddered at the memory of Jon's faded Y-front's, "so since you're not gonna go commando, we might as well get you something fun- don't you think?"

"That," Jon pointed an accusing finger. "does not look like fun!" He tipped his head to one side, following the sway of the fabric as Guy swung it around on his little finger. "It has no back! And why is it spotty?" he wanted to know.

"Haven't you ever seen a leopard? A tiger, any big cat?" Guy cocked his head to the side and looked at Jon, still spinning the thong on his finger.

"It's . . . no!" Jon shook his head quite firmly. "Find something else." he ordered. "Something with all parts attached!" He watched Guy with a stern expression on his face as his friend reluctantly returned the underwear to the rack. He's the one who needs 'Cheeky' on a tag, Jon thought, hiding his amusement.

"Oh fine, be that way. See if I ever take you to the zoo," Guy pouted and sighed his way through the racks, giving a yell when he found something he liked, waiting for Jon to join him. "Fine, Mr. My-underwear-can't-be-any-fun. Boxers. Silk, nice bright colors. Very sexy." he assured him. "Now, what's your size again?" Guy murmured, wrapping his arms around Jon and grabbing both cheeks, pinching firmly, then moving away again. "Right - got it... how do these look?"

Mollified, Jon giggled when Guy touched him, in public! "I like those." he said, his suspicions forgotten and that was all that was needed, Guy setting to work, going through the rack and picking out colors and sizes. Now I have clothes and shoes and a nice leather jacket, I even have jewelry. A thought occurred and he held up a finger. "Stay here." he ordered. "I'll be right back!" With that, he shot off, leaving Guy to pay for and wait for the underwear while he went back out into the market area, casting about with his eyes until he found what he sought.

Guy shrugged, tossing a few more items onto the pile and chatting with the salesgirl while she wrapped them up for him, leaning against the counter and stretching. Even for him, this was one hell of a long day of shopping, but Jon was going to look damned good. Especially in the leopard print thong he'd 'accidentally' included along with his purchase, on his dime, of course.

Hurrying back into the store, Jon slid his now-empty wallet back into his pocket and came up behind Guy, dropping something over his head before wrapping his arms around his waist and giving him a hug. "Thank you." he said with fervor. Guy picked up the chain that had appeared around his neck and read the inscription carved on the tag. It said simply, 'Guy' on one side, while on the other, it read, "My best friend."
